Apparently, Mr. and Mrs. Grant had been furious when they heard the free meal delivery service was being canceled and had even gotten into a fight with one of the delivery staff.
Brawls were a daily occurrence in the shelter, so the incident normally wouldnāt have escalated.
But as it turned out, that particular delivery person was the daughter of the head of the logistics department.
Soon, someone pointed out that since Liam Grant was no longer the captain of the rescue squad, he should have to give up the family quarters that had been assigned to him.
"Thereās been so much going on lately that no one paid any mind to it. But now that someone has brought it up, according to the regulations, they have to move out."
Daniel Hale said.
This was likely one of the reasons Liam Grant was so desperate to be reinstated.
"So thatās why. But heās come to the wrong person."
Nina Jacobs was letting Liam Grant live for now, but only so she could figure out what happened in her past life.
She had no intention of letting him have an easy time.
"But why him, of all people?"
Nina had always wondered why that woman, Melody Barron, refused to give up on Liam Grant.
In her past life, theyād had no dealings with Melody Barron.
"Melody Barron isnāt really interested in him. The one sheās after is probably Simon Abbott, but unfortunately, his whereabouts are unknown."
Daniel Hale replied.
Simon Abbott wasnāt one to fight for the spotlight, but he had masterminded many of Melody Barronās schemes.
If it hadnāt been for Daniel Hale suddenly awakening a Spiritual Element Superpower, all her previous schemes might very well have succeeded.
"I see."
Nina didnāt believe Simon Abbott was dead, either.
To her, the idea that Simon Abbott had lured away zombies for someone else was simply unbelievable.
And then there was that pristine room.
It all fueled her suspicions.
āWhat if Simon Abbott did all of this intentionally?ā
āAnd what was the connection between them and the Superpower User Alliance?ā
Nina felt like she was overlooking something important.
But she couldnāt quite put her finger on it.
She decided to stop thinking about it.
Sherry Renner returned very late.
She was still fuming when she got back.
"Iām so pissed! They still want to take Cole Dempsey away? I stood guard there all day. No one is getting him out of there."
Apparently, as soon as Sherry Renner had heard that people from the Superpower User Alliance had arrived, she had immediately gone to find out what was happening.
When she heard they had specifically asked to take Cole Dempsey, she went straight to where he was being held.
The staff at the interrogation rooms were fairly courteous to her after learning she would soon be a colleague in the Enforcement Bureau.
It was just that the closed-door meeting between Justin Lawson and the Alliance still hadnāt ended.
So she had come back.
"Getting him out of there would be a death sentence," Nina Jacobs said after listening.
Cole Dempsey was probably the last person who wanted to be let out right now.
After all, he had ratted out everyone at all their strongholds.
"Thatās true, but what if he manages to live a comfortable life after this? Heās responsible for so many deaths," Sherry Renner said.
"Lawson may have made a concession by agreeing to negotiate, but he wonāt let them just take away a key figure. You can rest assured about that."
Daniel Hale said.
The only question was when this closed-door meeting would finally end.
Back in her room, Nina Jacobs took out the Crystal Cores she had earned from selling supplies that day.
She separated the Fire Element Crystal Cores from the rest, then placed the Superpower Energy Stone, which had already turned gray, among the remaining Crystal Cores to let it absorb their energy.
She had received a good number of Crystal Cores from the dayās trades.
Moreover, her System Experience Points had increased by over 1,000.
It was just that she had too many supplies in her systemās inventory.
She had been selling them for days, but it looked like she had barely made a dent.
"If only I could trade directly with the shelter," Nina Jacobs muttered.
Her original plan had been to make a trip to City J after Daniel Hale awakened his Superpower.
There had to be plenty of supplies left to be salvaged thereāin other words, plenty of scavenging missions.
But before she left, she wanted to trade off more of her supplies.
"The logistics department? Itās responsible for planning and managing supplies. Simply put, they resupply whateverās running low and handle things like inventory counts and requisitions. The department head is a decent guy, itās just..."
When Nina Jacobs asked about the logistics department over breakfast, Daniel Hale patiently explained.
"Just what?" Nina Jacobs asked curiously.
"Heās just a bit of a penny-pincher and haggles over every little thing. Of course, that could just be because we have different ideas about spending..."
Daniel Hale didnāt mean it in a derogatory way; it was just that, in his eyes, Henry Dixon was a bit too much of a stickler for details.
That meticulous nature was probably exactly why Justin Lawson had made him the head of the logistics department.
The word was that he would continue to be in charge of the same duties after the new base was completed.
"Nina, why are you asking about this?"
Vera Coleman couldnāt help but ask.
"Itās nothing. I was just curious about whoās targeting Liam Grant and his family."
Nina Jacobs said, inventing a casual excuse.
āThe department in charge of managing and requisitioning supplies.ā
āIsnāt this exactly what Iāve been looking for?ā
Nina felt more and more that Daniel Haleās job was incredibly convenient. At the very least, it allowed them to get their hands on relevant intel whenever they needed it.
"Looks like itās going to be another boring day. Who knows when those people from the Superpower User Alliance are going to leave. Captain Pearson and the others arenāt even going out on missions anymore."
Leo Hale said listlessly, dipping a fried dough stick into his soy milk.
He usually went out with the rescue teams to kill zombies, but the entire shelter had been on lockdown ever since the people from the Superpower User Alliance arrived yesterday.
"It should be soon. And you... I try to find a position for you, but you wonāt take it. Killing zombies is fine, but then you refuse to officially join a team."
Daniel Hale said irritably.
He had originally wanted Leo Hale to join a rescue team, even if he had to start as a regular member.
As the system became more established, regular members could earn a corresponding number of Points for every mission they completed.
It was much safer, too.
But Leo Hale stubbornly refused, preferring to tag along behind them as unofficial backup.
He honestly didnāt know what his son was thinking.
"You donāt get it. Iām a Light Chaser, a seeker of freedom. I have my own ambitions."
Leo Hale stressed again.
All he got for his troubles was a slap to the back of the head.
"I think the problem is you have too much freedom. That girl came all the way to our front door yesterday. Donāt you go causing any trouble for me right now."
Daniel Hale warned.
"Itās not my fault she came here..."
A flicker of guilt crossed Leo Haleās face.
"Thatās right, I donāt think Leo started it. Donāt blame him," Vera Coleman chimed in to defend him.
"Trouble?"
Nina Jacobs had no interest in Leo Haleās private life.
But their reactions seemed a little odd.
"Itās just that two of the survivors we rescued during that trip to the mall were people I used to know," Leo Hale explained.
"Knew them? Thatās not what the girl said," Daniel Hale cut in.
The girl, with tears in her eyes, had told him that his son was the one who had made the first move.
"Alright, I chased after her before, happy now? But... but that was years ago! She got together with Bryce Dolan after that! Bryce Dolan is the other guy we rescued that day."
Back in his school days, Leo Hale had been quite insecure.
Bianca White was gentle and beautiful, and she played the piano wonderfully.
She was a goddess in the eyes of many of the boys, Leo Hale included.
One time, Bianca White approached him and asked if he was going to confess his feelings to her.
He excitedly agreed, but when he went to confess that night, she rejected him.
The next moment, dazzling lights flared, beautiful flower petals fluttered through the air, and romantic music began to play.
Bryce Dolan appeared, walking slowly toward Bianca White.
Amidst this meticulously planned, romantic confession, Bianca White accepted Bryce Dolan.
"Iām sorry, but I still like Bryce."
Bianca White said to him in front of everyone.
Only then did Leo Hale understand. He had just been a pawn in their little play.
