Chapter 1211: Boiling a frog in warm water
It seemed like there was advance notice that Xin Yanjun would bring along an impressive protĂ©gĂ©, as Doctor Dong looked at Xie Wanying and grinned from ear to ear: âGreat, Old Lin in our department said, with her around, thereâs nothing to fear.â
Teacher Linâs words were an exaggeration, made in jest. Xie Wanying gave a slight smile.
âDonât put too much pressure on her,â Xin Yanjun once again warned his colleagues with a protective tone.
Doctor Dong waved his hand dismissively, âWho would dare? Besides, the surgeons on duty tonight are familiar with her.â
âWho?â
âLi Chengyuan and Yin Fengchun.â
Are those the two surgeons on duty tonight? Xin Yanjunâs mind conjured up two rigid, stone-faced visages.
Doctor Dong, always the optimist, burst into laughter: âThe department head must think the two of us are like warm water and those two are like Frog Princes, so he decided to put us four togetherâwarm water boiling frogs.â
âPfft,â Xin Yanjun and Xie Wanying, as teacher and student, almost cracked up at Doctor Dongâs quip.
Xin Yanjun tugged at Doctor Dongâs white lab coat, holding back her laughter, glancing around to ensure the two âFrog Princesâ werenât nearby.
Doctor Dong was definitely the humorous type, Xie Wanying thought, smiling.
âThereâs an advantage to night shifts with Doctor Yin,â Doctor Dong, apparently reveling in the Frog Prince analogy, continued cheerfully, âLast time I ended up on a night shift with him by chance, his girlfriend brought him a midnight snack. And you know what? Whenever youâre on night duty with Doctor Yin, everyone gets a share. It was crab roe noodlesâabsolutely delectable.â
Recalling the gastronomic delight delivered by Doctor Yinâs girlfriend, Doctor Dong smacked his lips in praise, seeming to savor the memory.
âYou could have your wife deliver you a midnight snack,â Xin Yanjun said with a chuckle.
âImpossible. My wife wouldnât know where to find anything tasty. Doctor Yinâs girlfriend is exceptional; she sells delicious tea and brings food just as phenomenal,â Doctor Dong replied matter-of-factly before turning to Xie Wanying, âSheâs your friend, isnât she? Do you know if sheâll be bringing over midnight snacks for Doctor Yin tonight?â
Xie Wanying nodded; her childhood friend had indeed mentioned planning to deliver snacks, and she had no doubt her friend would include all the emergency staff in her distribution. Her friend was always savvy about handling interpersonal relationships.
As for Wu Lixuanâs extensive knowledge of gourmet shops, it was entirely due to her business connectionsânetworking within her industry continually introduced her to these culinary treasures.
âExactly, sheâs got a real knack for dealing with people,â Doctor Dong gave Wu Lixuan a thumbs-up, adding, âDoctor Yin dating her caught us all by surprise.â
A girl who excelled at connecting with people and was incredibly considerate, coupled with a guy whose face was perpetually sternâoutsiders found it a bit astonishing that these two ended up together.
It just goes to show that love always defies easy guesses.
The three of them found their daytime colleagues, exchanged updates on all the patients in the Observation Room and Emergency Resuscitation Room, and then took over after their colleagues clocked out. Their night shift had officially begun.
The internal medicine physicians returned separately to the two internal medicine consultation rooms.
Meanwhile, the outpatient doctors had finished their shifts, leaving those unable to secure outpatient appointments during the day to swarm into the emergency department. Guoxieâs outpatient slots were notoriously difficult to obtain during the day, but for longstanding patients, it was still possible for them to grab a spot. When their conditions flare up unexpectedly, theyâve no choice but to turn to the emergency department. Furthermore, during daytime emergency hours, doctors could refer patients to outpatient clinics, but at night, that option wasnât viable. As Xie Wanying had pointed out, domestic emergency care rarely turns anyone away, as doctors fear the consequences of refusing impetuously. The combination of factors meant the busyness of their emergency night shift was entirely predictable.
