Doctor Chiang helped arrange the non-emergency ambulance which arrived downstairs at the provincial hospitalâs inpatient department.
Xie Wanying and her sister-in-law together pushed her cousinâs stretcher bed downstairs.
A certified nurse named Lu Xin came with the ambulance and would accompany them to the Capital, responsible for managing all the emergency equipment and medication accompanying the patient.
Xie Wanying walked over and first confirmed with Nurse Lu Xin whether the emergency items were all present.
Because Xiao Shugang might encounter sudden cardiovascular emergencies on the way, they needed to bring small defibrillators, suction tubes, laryngoscope and tracheal intubation, infusion tools, heart-strengthening medicine, etc. These items were reported to the airline company in advance and would be brought onto the flight until safely arriving at Capital Airport.
"We have everything. Moreover, this is a newly acquired ambulance from the city, equipped with comprehensive monitoring equipment, meant for transporting critical patients," Lu Xin introduced.
Upon hearing this, Xie Wanying and Shang Siling felt slightly relieved.
The several of them worked together to transfer the patient to the stretcher bed of the ambulance and pushed him onto the ambulance. Time was pressing, and they were just about to leave when suddenly two loud voices called to them from afar, shouting for them to stop.
"Shugang, Siling, donât go."
Everyone turned their heads.
A woman, full of vigor, ran all the way from the hospital entrance. She was in her fifties, but well-maintained, with smooth skin, appearing relatively young, wearing a blue jacket that was both decent and slightly affluent.
The womanâs forehead and nose bridge were high, resembling the face of her cousin Xiao Shugang. With this thought, Xie Wanying knew who she was: her elder cousin aunt, Zhou Ruoxue.
Accompanied by her sister-in-lawâs response of "Mom," she completely confirmed her guess.
"Mom, didnât I tell you not to come? Weâre leaving," Shang Siling said to her rushing mother-in-law.
Gasping for breath, Zhou Ruoxue reached everyone, one hand supporting her knee, the other finger pointing at her daughter-in-law in blame: "Are you out of your mind!"
"Mom, Iâm not out of my mind." Shang Siling was puzzled by her mother-in-lawâs words.
"I heard from Shugangâs aunts over the phone that itâs impossible, Shugang canât endure and will die en route. The doctors at the provincial hospital told you to take the risk yourself, how dare you put your husband on a plane?" Zhou Ruoxue said angrily to her daughter-in-law.
"Mom. Havenât I spoken to you on the phone about this? Dr. Shim at the Capital is a renowned doctor, and itâs at his approval that weâre proceeding this way. Iâm not muddle-headed or reckless," Shang Siling explained, "Besides, Yingying is accompanying us, thereâs no reason to fear."
Unknown from what Zhou Ruomei relayed, Zhou Ruoxue turned her head, her gaze at Xie Wanying filled with coldness.
"Yingying is just an intern, what could she possibly understand!" Zhou Ruoxue criticized her daughter-in-law through gritted teeth, "And you say youâre not muddle-headed?"
"Mom, you donât know, the doctors at the Capital have great trust in Yingying, believing sheâs capable." Shang Siling had personally heard Shim Youhuan talking to Xie Wanying over the phone; the trust in Xie Wanying was well-founded, "Moreover, we have the nurse accompanying us."
"What can a nurse do?" Zhou Ruoxue dismissed the nurse and likewise wouldnât consider Xie Wanying, an intern medical student.
"Mom, Iâm not discussing this anymore, weâre on a tight time schedule going to the airport." Shang Siling shook off her mother-in-lawâs pulling hand to return to the ambulance. The time to save her husband was very tight.
Seeing this, Zhou Ruoxue ran to the back door of the ambulance and positioned herself to use her body to block the vehicle: "No! I wonât allow you to send my son to his death."
