Chapter 455: Chapter 454: Fighting for the Office
No surgeries were scheduled for Friday.
Yan Feifan arrived at the Affiliated Hospital and first went to the trauma surgery department to check on the recovery of the lab mice with the artificial penises. Then, he hurried over to the Little Red House.
Carolyn was still in the ICU and hadnât regained consciousness, but her vital signs were stable.
Barring any complications, she would be transferred to a regular ward this afternoon to continue her recovery.
Mr. Vega would also be taking a flight back to the United States that evening.
After making a brief tour of the Affiliated Hospital, Yan Feifan hurried back to the plastic surgery center for his lesson with Mr. Wang.
As he walked into the directorâs office, Mr. Wang, who was waiting for him, delivered a piece of news.
Tang Zheng had applied to be a volunteer for the in-vivo nerve cultivation project.
Wang Chuan explained in a low voice, "I came to the hospital first thing this morning to check on Tang Zhengâs condition."
"His family told me that he regained consciousness for a while last night after the anesthetic started to wear off."
"After learning the full extent of his injuries, he applied to join our in-vivo nerve cultivation project as a volunteer."
"He also said..."
Wang Chuan said, his voice thick with emotion, "He told me to tell you to âdo whatever you wantâ with him, so you can gain more experience for Yanyanâs reconstructive surgery."
The words didnât move Yan Feifan much. Instead, he questioned them. "Mr. Wang, Mr. Tang has been in an anesthetic-induced coma ever since he arrived at the hospital yesterday."
"When he woke up briefly in the middle of the night, I seriously doubt he could even think clearly enough to count to ten."
"Are you sure heâs the one who said something that coherent?"
Wang Chuan shot Yan Feifan a glare and said irritably, "You! Why must you be so difficult about everything?"
"It doesnât matter who said it. For Tang Zheng, this is still the best option."
"Since heâs already this badly injured, itâs better to endure all the pain in one concentrated period."
Wang Chuan then urged, "Feifan, hurry up and draw up a plastic and reconstructive surgery plan for Tang Zheng."
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes. "Mr. Wang, your concern is clouding your judgment."
"Itâs far too early to be drafting a surgical plan."
"First, you need to sever the main facial nerves on his left cheek. We can talk about the rest after the cultivation is successful."
Mr. Wang paused, then gave a wry smile. "I was getting ahead of myself. This in-vivo nerve cultivation will take at least a month or two."
He paused for a moment before continuing slowly, "When I first took Tang Zheng on as my student, I had high hopes for him."
"But as time went on, those hopes dwindled, eventually turning to disappointment. Then, I met you."
"I just never, ever thought..."
Wang Chuan sighed. "That he would contribute to restoring Yanyanâs appearance in this way..."
He sighed a few more times, then composed himself, his expression turning stern. "You were over half an hour late today. Donât let it happen again."
"Letâs begin todayâs lesson..."
At noon, Yan Feifan went to the first staff cafeteria to have lunch with Yu Suye.
The two had just found an empty table and sat down when someone approached with a tray.
"Mr. Yan, may I sit here?"
Yan Feifan glanced up. It was Ren Zhen, Mr. Liuâs office director.
The man had only recently been promoted by Mr. Liu.
The previous office director had been transferred to an unimportant post at the Health Commission a few days ago, following the departure of the former hospital president.
Yan Feifan didnât know Ren Zhen well.
He asked directly, "Mr. Ren, what is it?"
"Itâs just a small matter."
As he spoke, Ren Zhen sat down next to Yan Feifan.
"Mr. Yan, I happened to overhear the president mention that youâre looking to hire a personal assistant."
"I was wondering if you had any candidates in mind?"
Yan Feifan shook his head. "The thought only just occurred to me yesterday. Nothingâs been decided yet."
"Do you have a suitable candidate to recommend, Mr. Ren?"
Ren Zhenâs face was all smiles. "I wouldnât go so far as to say I have the perfect candidate, but Iâve always worked in administration, so I have a wide network and know a lot of people."
"Mr. Yan, why donât you tell me what youâre looking for in an assistant? Perhaps I can recommend someone."
Yan Feifan didnât overthink it and simply listed the criteria for an assistant that he had discussed with his sister and Yu Suye the previous night.
"They need to be skilled in combatâex-special forces would be even better. They also need to know how to drive."
"A decent level of education, reliable, and methodical."
"And some basic medical training."
After hearing Yan Feifanâs specific requirements for the assistant, Ren Zhen thought for a moment before asking, "Mr. Yan, is the medical training an absolute must?"
Yan Feifan replied quietly, "The medical background isnât mandatory, but it would certainly be ideal."
"After all, my work involves treating patients, saving lives, and medical research."
He stressed, "The combat skills are a must, and they have to be excellent. In a worst-case scenario, if I run into a desperate person causing a scene at the hospital, he needs to be able to protect me."
Ren Zhen smiled. "Mr. Yan, aside from the lack of a medical background, I actually have the perfect person to recommend."
"He has a college diploma in vehicle inspection and maintenance, and he enlisted in the army right after graduation."
"He was in the military for seven yearsâtwo years as a conscript and five in the field as special forces. He was discharged last year and was assigned a driving job at a public institution."
"However, he got into a fight with some thugs, accidentally injured someone, and was detained by the police. He had to leave his original job because of it."
Ren Zhen quickly added, "Mr. Yan, about that fight, he was definitely acting as a good Samaritan. He just didnât hold back enough."
Yan Feifan grunted in acknowledgment. "I can understand that."
"Some of the laws and regulations these days can be tricky. It feels like theyâre written to restrict the good guys and protect the bad guys."
"Yes, yes, I feel the exact same way."
Ren Zhen chimed in enthusiastically before continuing his introduction. "Mr. Yan, right now, the guyâs delivering food during the day and working as a designated driver at night."
"That kind of work isnât a long-term solution, after all."
"So, Mr. Yan, what do you think?"
Yan Feifan thought for a moment. "Alright, Mr. Ren. Have him bring his resume and come see me at the hospital tomorrow morning at eight."
"We can meet and talk things over then..."
Ren Zhen beamed. "No problem. Iâll make sure he gets to the hospital on time to see you."
With that settled, Yan Feifan started to eat his lunch in peace.
He was halfway through his meal when he heard Ren Zhen lower his voice again. "Mr. Yan, someone is trying to take your office in the Little Red House from you, and theyâre using Mr. Haoâs name to do it."
"Mr. Hao?"
Yan Feifan couldnât help but frown.
Hao Junpeng. He was one of only two academicians from the Academy of Engineering at the Affiliated Hospital, an absolute titan in his field, with remarkable achievements in areas like cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver transplantation.
However, the man didnât have a very good reputation at the hospital. He was known for being domineering and was rumored to be greedy and lecherous.
"Mr. Hao has his own research institute at the hospital. Itâs not like heâs short on office space, is he?"
Ren Zhen scoffed, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Itâs just a member of his team, throwing his weight around by using Mr. Haoâs name."
"The thing is, Mr. Hao has been talking about leaving our Affiliated Hospital for the last two or three years, and he keeps using it as leverage to make all sorts of demands."
"He might even use this to stir up some trouble."
Yan Feifan couldnât help but snort in contempt. "The bigger the talent, the bigger the ego, huh?"
Ren Zhen continued, "The logistics department didnât dare to offend them, so they reported the matter to the president."
"The president has already made it clear that the office has been assigned to you and thereâs no reason to take it back."
"Someone might come to you directly to ask for it..."
