The intruder leaned back.
"Iâm going to ask you a question. If you hesitate in your answer, this hatchet will land on your forehead, your chest, or, if youâre unlucky, somewhere lower."
"..."
"Answer."
"I-I understand."
In all his years, no one had talked to Steven like this. Even nobles treated him with caution.
âWho is he? When did I provoke someone like this?â
His thoughts raced.
The intruder smirked.
"Your mindâs racing. Curious who I am, arenât you?"
"Y-Yes, I am curious."
Despite shaking, Steven asked honestly.
The man answered.
"Iâm Baron Blanks, whom you have been referring to as some backwater knight."
"..."
Steven froze completely as the name finally clicked in his mind.
Next an overwhelming scream erupted in his mind.
âFUCKKKK!â
âFuckkkk!â
âAhahaha!â
âBaron Blanks... That Baron Blanks...â
âWhy is he so fucking strong?â
âIsnât he Master rank? So how did he kill two Master ranks like nothing?â
âNo... Bullshit...â
âThis is too much bullshit...â
Countless curses flooded Stevenâs mind, but he forced himself to keep his composure. He wiped the sweat on his forehead and tried to straighten his back.
"So, to what pleasure do I owe?" he asked, his voice shaking despite his forced smile.
He tried his level best to drag the situation.
âCalm down Steven..Help might be in the way.â
"Ohh, itâs nothing. I just came here for a simple trade deal, but some fuckers stopped me."
"...?"
Question marks practically floated around Stevenâs head.
"What trade deal, Sir?" he asked, sounding sincere even as he hid his disgust behind a stiff grin.
âBe all the smug you want... Once Simon comes, you are going to be fucked up!â
"I have some goods to sell."
"What kind of goods?" Steven asked. He glanced at his assistant, who quickly said, "Sir, he might be talking about those garments and jewelry!"
A sudden thought clicked in Stevenâs mind. His eyes lit up.
âHe might be unable to trade them because of bandits. So he managed to bring them here to sell.â
âWait...Thatâs also good. This man is in his field. If we form partnership then...â
âEven if he is hostile now as said, there are no eternal enemies.â
"In that case... Letâs go. I will personally see the goods myself," Steven said.
"Come, follow me."
Ethan stood up casually, grabbed the hatchet from the table, and walked out. Steven and his assistant followed behind him, quickening their steps when they saw Guild men lying on the ground, beaten unconscious with huge bumps swelling on their heads.
When they finally reached the entrance, they saw a large crowd gathered.
"Itâs attracting so much attention!" Steven said in delight, imagining profits swelling in his mind.
But as soon as he stepped forward, he froze.
A huge caravan stood in front of them, covered with heavy cloth.
"You are eager to see it, right?" Ethan asked with a sinister smile that made Stevenâs heart drop. That smile felt familiar.
It felt like déjà vu.
Stevenâs voice trembled as he nodded though the entire fibre of his existence screamed no.
"Ye... Yes!"
"Great!" Ethan clapped his hands. "Come on, men. Open those goods."
The cloth was pulled aside and as soon as his eyes fell on it.
Stevenâs eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
"Ahhhh!"
A scream tore out of him as he stumbled back.
Inside the caravan was not jewelry, not clothes, not anything remotely normal.
It was a massive cage.
And inside the cage were men stuffed one on top of another, bruised, battered, and abused.
They were clearly not common people.
Mercenaries...Yes they were the mercenaries and adventurers disguised as bandits.
"Youuuu!" Steven shouted, pointing a trembling finger at Ethan.
"What? Me?" Ethan blinked innocently. "I brought such high-quality goods for you yet you donât want to buy them?"
He made a sad, heartbroken expression that almost looked genuine. His knightsâ eyes twitched. The face he made was like a man grieving a lost treasure.
"So, do you want to buy it?"
"Tha..." Steven felt his tongue twist. For the first time in his life, he couldnât form a sentence.
Before he could speak, the crowd around them began chattering excitedly.
"Hmm! These slaves look quite good and healthy."
"Yes, I can make them work in farmland."
"They look strong so I am sure would last long. I donât need cows or buffaloes to plough. I can use them!"
"I need people to lift heavy things. They look perfect."
Ethanâs smile widened as he spread his arms.
"See! They are so eager to buy."
He raised his hand and shouted.
"Listen, everyone! You can buy them all for a piece of copper!"
"What, for real?!"
"Is this a scam?"
"Not all!"Ethan shook his head.
"One copper! Thatâs all it takes!"
Inside the cage, the mercenaries trembled with humiliation.
Sold...
They were sold for a single copper.
Their will shattered hearing this.
Kill us.
Just kill us.
We canât be humiliated anymore.
Contrary to their thoughts,Ethan shouted."Donât shout..Line up...We have ample to sell..Quicklyy.."
"Kekkee..Thatâs great..Last time I went to an auction and it was so costly but now I can finally buy them."
"ENOUGHHHH!"
A heavy pressure slammed down across the entire plaza like a falling mountain. The crowd dropped to the ground. The air trembled under the power.
Everyone except Ethan was forced down.
Ethan simply raised his head and grinned.
Floating above them in the sky was a bulky man radiating an overwhelming aura.
Ethan laughed loudly seeing him
"Took you long enough! I have been waiting for you!"
He stepped lightly, and in the next instant, his figure shot into the air like a rocket. Wind exploded behind him as he rose.
He came face to face with the giant man who studied him curiously.
"So you are the monster everyone is talking about?" Ethan asked, narrowing his eyes.
Simon raised a brow. "You are one of us. I thought you would be a weakling, however..." Even with his blank expression, there was a flicker of surprise.
"Good. At least you arenât a conceited fool."Ethan clapped.
"However, it seems you failed to understand the situation, or you are simply illiterate, because..."
A deep crimson light flashed through Ethanâs eyes.
"How dare you ignore my warning and sell people as slaves."
The moment the words left his mouth, both their auras clashed violently.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
A shockwave exploded outward, shaking the entire Capital, rattling windows and throwing dust into the air. The sky itself seemed to tremble as the two forces collided, releasing a deafening roar that echoed through the city.
