Chapter 441: The betrayal and the plan
[LOCATION: Ares Fleet Formation â Main Briefing Room]
[LOCAL TIME: 06:42 Fleet Standard]
[AMBIENT TEMPERATURE: 24°C | Emergency Lighting: Active]
Noah returned to the briefing room expecting to find Kelvin and Lyra deep in calculations, probably arguing over some obscure mathematical principle while surrounded by star charts and holographic displays. Instead, he walked into a scene that made his blood freeze.
Kelvin sat motionless in his chair, shadow tendrils wrapped around his torso and arms like living restraints. His eyes were completely blackâthe same inhuman darkness theyâd seen in the suicide operatives. But he was breathing, conscious, just⊠empty.
Lyra stood behind him, one hand resting casually on Kelvinâs shoulder, her own eyes matching that same terrible blackness.
âHello, Noah,â she said pleasantly, as if they were meeting for lunch instead of a standoff. âPerfect timing.â
Noahâs hand moved instinctively folded into a fist, but Lyraâs smile sharpened.
âI wouldnât,â she said, her grip tightening on Kelvinâs shoulder. âOne thought from me, and his own shadow tears his heart out from the inside. Youâve seen how our operatives can kill themselves, havenât you? Same principle, except Iâm controlling his shadow instead of him controlling his own.â
Noah forced himself to stillness, void energy circulating beneath his skin but contained. âWhat do you want?â
âTwo simple things. First, youâre going to release our operative from your domain. Right now.â
âAnd second?â
âYouâre going to sever your domain link with Kelvin. I know you can appear at his side instantly, and that makes extraction⊠complicated.â
Noah studied her face, looking for traces of the teammate heâd known for months. There were none. Whatever was looking back at him had been wearing Lyraâs face like a mask, and now the mask was off.
âI suspected there was a mole on the team,â Noah said quietly. âHow did the Eighth know our moves on Earth? How did they track me to Bruceâs location? How did they find us at the underwater facility?â He shook his head. âI always suspected, but I trusted you. That was my mistake.â
âTrust is a weakness,â Lyra replied. âThe Eighth taught me that many years ago.â
Noahâs mind raced through implications he didnât want to accept. âHow long ago? How is this possible? And how does she have shadow abilities when sheâs supposed to be a shapeshifter? Dual abilities donât work like that.â
Even second and third generation awakened humans developed related powersâfire users might gain steam or heat manipulation, water users could develop ice abilities. But shapeshifting and shadow manipulation were completely unconnected power sets.
âUnless she was never a shapeshifter at all.â
âHow do I know youâll keep your word about Kelvin if I cut the domain link?â Noah asked. âItâs not like you can actually tell if the connection is gone.â
Lyraâs smile turned predatory. âSimple. The moment you appear at his sideâif you can appear at his sideâweâll know the link is still active. I dare you to try.â
She leaned forward slightly, her voice dropping to a whisper. âGo ahead, Noah. Void blink to his position. See what happens to his internal organs when I get surprised.â
Noah felt the trap closing around him. She was rightâany attempt to rescue Kelvin directly would give her the excuse she needed to kill him.
âThis isnât the right thing to do, Lyra.â
âMy name isnât Lyra,â she said simply. âAnd Iâm doing this for the continuity. The one you call the Eighth will live and reign supreme, as he has for a thousand years.â
Noah sighed, recognizing the same fanatical devotion theyâd encountered in the suicide operatives. Whatever organization the Eighth had built, it created believers who would sacrifice anything for their cause.
âFine,â he said quietly.
Purple void energy erupted in the center of the room as the elite operative materialized, still bound in the restraints Noah had used during his capture. The manâs eyes went immediately to the sceneâKelvin bound by shadow tendrils, Lyraâs black eyes, Noah standing helplessly to the side.
Understanding dawned on the eliteâs face. He lunged toward Noah with murderous intent, shadow blades forming around his hands even as the void restraints dissolved.
âStand down, soldier,â Lyra commanded sharply.
The elite stopped mid-attack, his body going rigid with military discipline despite his obvious desire to kill Noah.
âI have direct orders for a quiet extraction,â Lyra continued. âGo fetch the telepath and destroy all research materials. Leave no trace of what we discovered here.â
The operative moved with professional efficiency. Shadow energy poured from his hands, enveloping the holographic displays, star charts, and computational equipment theyâd been using. Machines sparked and died as darkness consumed their memory banks. Paper charts crumbled to ash as shadow tendrils wrapped around them.
Noah watched in silence as hours of work vanished in seconds. Every piece of evidence, every calculation, every step toward solving the riddleâerased.
âNo sudden movements, Noah,â Lyra warned, her voice carrying lethal certainty. âI know exactly what youâre capable of. The moment I feel threatened, Kelvinâs shadow crushes his heart. Youâve seen what our operatives can do to themselvesâimagine what I can make his own shadow do to him.â
Noah knew she wasnât bluffing. Heâd watched the suicide operatives use their own abilities to kill themselves without a second thought. If Lyra could control Kelvinâs shadow the same wayâŠ
âThereâs nothing I can do. Not directly.â
The elite returned minutes later, dragging Bruce behind him. The telepathâs head was encased in a bubble of shadow that presumably prevented him from using his abilities or calling for help. His eyes were wide with fear and confusion, but he couldnât speak or project thoughts through the dark barrier.
âGoodbye, Noah Eclipse,â Lyra said, her tone almost fond. âThis has been a fun adventure, all the way from the Vanguard Force.â
She blew him a kiss with mocking affection. âDo give my regards to the rest of the team. Tell them I enjoyed our time together, even if it was all a lie.â
The floor beneath them began to ripple like liquid shadow. Lyra, Kelvin, Bruce, and the operative sank into the darkness as if it were quicksand, disappearing from sight until only normal floor remained.
Noah stood alone in the destroyed briefing room, surrounded by the ashes of their research and the weight of complete failure.
â
The remaining team members sat in King Aureliusâs personal conference chamber, the silence heavy with shock and recrimination. Theyâd gathered to hear Noahâs report about what happened, but the magnitude of the betrayal seemed to have stolen everyoneâs capacity for normal conversation.
Sophieâs eyes were red from crying, her usual composure shattered by Kelvinâs capture. She sat curled in her chair, occasionally wiping away tears that wouldnât stop coming.
Dianaâs fury radiated from her like heat from a furnace. Her hands clenched and unclenched repeatedly, her jaw tight with rage that had nowhere to go. Every few minutes she muttered something about what sheâd do to Lyra when she got her hands on her.
Uncle Dom looked confused and hurt, his usual cheerful demeanor replaced by bewilderment. He kept shaking his head as if trying to make sense of how someone theyâd trusted could have deceived them so completely.
Lucas sat with his head in his hands, processing the severe implications of having an enemy agent embedded in their team for months. Every operation, every plan, every secretâall of it compromised.
Lucy maintained her royal composure, but Noah could see the strain in her posture, the way she held herself too rigidly to hide her emotional response.
King Aurelius and his wives occupied the far end of the table, their expressions showing sympathy mixed with the practical concern of allies whose plans had just been destroyed.
âI canât take this anymore,â Noah said finally, breaking the oppressive silence. âEveryone deserves to know the truth.â
All eyes turned to him, but he wasnât looking at any of them. His gaze was fixed on the tableâs surface as he prepared to reveal secrets.
âThis was part of the plan. At least, Kelvin and I figured this part out on our own.â
The silence that followed was differentâsharper, more dangerous.
âAfter the fake kidnapping of King Aurelius, Kelvin came to me with his observations about a potential mole. We knew someone was feeding information to the Eighth, but we werenât sure who.â
Diana stood up so fast her chair fell backward. Her fist connected with Noahâs face before he could react, the impact snapping his head to the side and splitting his lip.
âWhy wouldnât you tell us?â she shouted, hitting him again. âWhy would you keep that from the team?â
Noah didnât try to block her strikes, accepting them as his due. âBecause we werenât sure who the mole was.â
Dianaâs laugh was bitter and sharp. âOh really? Let me guessâyou for sure didnât think it was your dearest girlfriend Sophie, right?â She gestured mockingly toward Sophie, who was staring at Noah with hurt and confusion. âAnd it sure as hell couldnât have been Lucas, your number one student from the academy.â
She spun around, her fury expanding to encompass the entire room. âAnd Princess Lucy? No way she could be a traitor, not when sheâs got eyes for our heroic dragon rider. Uncle Dom? Couldnât be him either, because the manâs crazyâso crazy his own father put him in a psych ward and his brother never thought to free him!â
Dianaâs voice rose with each accusation, her pain and anger spilling out in a torrent of recrimination. âSo that left two potential suspects, didnât it? Meâbecause I was from School Eight while you were from School Twelve. And Lyraâbecause she was just some girl we met at the Vanguard station after the interschool tournament.â
She turned back to Noah, her eyes blazing. âWas I missing something? Because from where Iâm standing, you and Kelvin decided to play detective with all our lives at stake!â
âDianaââ Lucas started, but she cut him off.
âDonât!â She whirled to face the rest of the team. âDonât any of you try to defend this! Weâre all sitting here like hypocrites, pretending this was some unavoidable tragedy when it was just another case of Noah thinking he could handle everything alone!â
She pointed at Lucy. âA princess in over her head, playing at being a soldier because itâs more exciting than royal duties.â
Her finger swung to Lucas. âA misguided leader whoâs so busy following his best friend that heâs forgotten how to think for himself.â
She turned to Uncle Dom. âA broken man whoâs been used as a pawn by his own family.â
Finally, she looked at Sophie. âAnd youâsitting there crying over Kelvin when you should be furious that your boyfriend decided your feelings mattered less than his detective fantasies.â
Diana grabbed her jacket from the back of her fallen chair. âIâm done. Done with the secrets, done with the plans within plans, done with being treated like Iâm not trustworthy enough to handle the truth.â
She headed toward the door, then paused and looked back. âFor the record, I confessed my feelings to Kelvin back on Raiju Prime. So if your brilliant deduction skills had been working, you might have realized I had more reasons to protect him than betray him.â
The door slammed behind her, leaving the rest of the team in stunned silence.
After several minutes, Lucas cleared his throat. âSince you and Kelvin came up with this plan, whatâs the way forward now?â
Noah said nothing.
âNoah?â Sophieâs voice was quiet, tentative. âWhat do we do next?â
âWe canât do anything for twelve hours,â Noah said finally.
Dianaâs voice came from the doorwayâsheâd returned without anyone noticing. âTwelve hours? What kind of arbitraryââ
âIf you donât trust me,â Noah interrupted, âthen trust Kelvin.â
Diana stared at him for a long moment, then walked away again without another word.
One by one, the others began to leave. King Aurelius and his wives departed first, offering quiet words of support but recognizing that the team needed space to process their internal conflicts.
Uncle Dom left next, still looking confused and hurt. Lucy followed, her royal training helping her maintain dignity even in the face of emotional turmoil.
Lucas and Sophie were the last to go. Lucas stopped beside Noahâs chair, placing a hand on his friendâs shoulder.
âI trust you,â he said simply. âI donât understand what youâre doing, but I trust you.â
Sophie approached after Lucas left, wrapping her arms around Noah from behind and holding him tightly.
âI trust you to figure this out,â she whispered in his ear. âWhatever plan you and Kelvin made, I believe in both of you.â
She kissed his cheek gently, then left him alone in the conference room.
Noah sat in silence for several minutes, processing the weight of his friendsâ disappointment and anger. He understood their feelingsâheâd made choices that hurt people he cared about, kept secrets that endangered lives, prioritized mission success over team cohesion.
But he also knew that some plans required sacrifice, and some secrets had to be kept until the right moment.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small deviceâsomething that looked like a standard communication unit but bore subtle modifications that suggested more sophisticated capabilities.
âCome on, Kelvin,â he muttered, staring at the inactive screen. âCome on.â
