Volume 2 Chapter 35 part1
âThat should do the trick.â [Ryouma]
After ensuring that the bad adventurers couldnât escape, I was about to go call someone, but before I could, two people had already arrived.
I was wary at first, thinking it might be a new enemy, but that was immediately proven to be a needless fear.
âYouâve already taken care of them, de gozaru?â [Asagi]
âAsagi-san! And Raypin-san too?â [Ryouma]
âA group of adventurers ran to us, saying thereâs an adventurer who was dealing with a group of bad adventurers on his own.â [Asagi]
So, the six of them called them.
âThey said the adventurer had some slimes with him, so I thought it might be you. Looks like I was right. Itâs good to see youâre safe, de aru. How about those guys, de aru?â [Raypin]
âThey donât look dead, but theyâre not moving even a little.â [Asagi]
They said after seeing how tightly bound the bad adventurers were.
I couldnât leave the bad adventurers by themselves, so in order to both heal them and keep them from running, I attached a brace on them along with a cast made out of weeds and the hardening liquid of the sticky slime, then I gagged them with a ball gag with holes for breathing (made out of stone), and then lastly, paralyzed them with the paralyzing poison of the poison slime.
Also, it would be a problem if they were attacked by monsters while I was away, so I also had the slimes surround them completely. I admit there might be a bit too many slimes.
âYouâve basically buried them, de aruâŠâ [Raypin]
âHmm⊠Iâll keep watch here, de gozaru. They canât escape, so take your slimes with you and go to the receptionist desk. Jeff and the rest should be waiting already.â [Asagi]
âAh, right! I have to hurry.â [Ryouma]
âIâll go too. I can take you there with my magic, de aru.â [Raypin]
I took Raypin-san on his offer and hurriedly put my slimes back into my Dimension Home.
The both of them were a bit shocked at that, but we hurried back anyway.
Iâm really late.
After explaining everything to the receptionist girl, I was told to go back to work.
Apparently, Iâd already missed the guild master, so weâll have to talk about my punishment later.
Since that was the case, I went ahead and did what needed to be done first.
âIâm sorry for being late!â [Ryouma]
I apologized to my party for making them wait.
Jeff-san and the others werenât angry at all, however. At most, they just teased me for it.
After the job was done, when everyone else was going home, I was summoned by the guild master.
âYou came⊠Well, take a seat.â [Wogan]
The guild master sat before the receptionist desk, looking visibly haggard.
No matter what kind of punishment I get, I brought this upon myself⊠I do hope the punishment isnât too severe, though.
ââŠFirst things first, youâre not going to be punished, so quit it with that face.â [Wogan]
âIâm acquitted?â [Ryouma]
âYou couldnât call for help because you were worried about those six, right? Moreover, thanks to you, those 6 were safe. Your testimony matches theirs as well, and well⊠Sacchi and his gang is a bit complicated, but we apprehended them to be safe. I acknowledge you had a good reason to be late, soâŠ
No punishment! Iâm sure youâre not fond of punishments either.â [Wogan]
I see, but then why does he look so tired?
âAnother reason is because of Sacchi and his gang. Theyâre not particularly trusted, you see.â [Wogan]
âDid they insist they were innocent?â [Ryouma]
âTheyâve been on poor behavior until last year.â [Wogan]
âUntil last year?â [Ryouma]
The way he said that seemed odd.
âI know their leader Sacchi might not look it anymore, but he used to be a serious and skilled adventurer.â [Wogan]
Yep, not one bit. But I didnât say that out loud and just quietly listened.
Apparently, Sacchiâs behavior started to turn for the worse when he became a C Ranker.
âPromoting from a C to a B is one of the walls an adventurer has to overcome. Thatâs the first major hurdle in an adventurerâs career, and unfortunately, Sacchi lost his way after trying to break through that wall repeatedly.â [Wogan]
Apparently, he grew more and more demanding of his comrades and he even started drinking and getting into fights frequently.
âAnd then all of the sudden he started grouping up with novices, but those were all adventurers with poor behavior too. Only, they started acting more proper, so I thought things were going well, but then today happened.
Seeing the bad group clean themselves up and start getting some achievements, at first, I doubted my ears, but gradually, I thought maybe Sacchi finally got himself together and was going to be someone I could trust to raise the novices, but, wellâŠ
Looks like they just got better at hiding their crimes. Thatâs unfortunate.â [Wogan]
I see. He must be feeling down because a subordinate he trusted betrayed his trust.
He wouldnât be feeling sad if he didnât trust them, after all. Although, I guess one could also develop some attachment after monitoring someone for so long, even if it was originally because he didnât trust them.
In the end, before he knew it, heâd already grown to trust them, only for that trust to be shattered. Itâs not an uncommon story, so itâs bound to repeat itself. Unfortunately, itâs not something easy to get used to.
ââŠWhy are you looking at me like that?â [Wogan]
One day, youâll retire, and youâll feel much better.
I didnât say it out loud, but apparently, it showed on my eyes.
âYou look like youâre trying to cheer me up, but you know, youâre also one of the reasons why Iâm so tired right now.
âŠYou got caught up in a mess in the middle of the work, so now I have to report to the duke. Iâm not looking forward to thisâŠâ [Wogan]
Ah, so heâs also worrying about what heâs superiors are going to say.
Guild masters sure donât have it easy. And the dukeâs family are worried about me too.
I donât think theyâd get mad at him over something like this, but itâs understandable why heâs so worried.
âYouâre not even an adult and yet you keep making that face. Did something happen to you in the past?â [Wogan]
Apparently, he could clearly feel the pity coming out from my eyes.
âAnyway, even if we put the duke aside, I donât think youâre guilty of anything. Thatâs all. Youâre dismissed.
If youâre not happy with that, well⊠Just reflect on you own.â [Wogan]
âThank you.â [Ryouma]
After that I left.
Volume 2 Chapter 35 part2
I went to where the carriages where, and as it turns out, word of what happened this morning had already spread. Many of the adventurers praised me for my efforts, and there were even some who let me ride first, saying I mustâve been tired.
On the way back home, I thought back to what happened this afternoon.
I donât regret defeating Sacchi and his gang, but I was pissed off before I responded with violence. I know the situation called for a beating, but I wonder if the real reason I beat them was because I was pissed. I donât know, but I canât deny the possibility.
Am I a child? No. My body may be that of a childâs, but Iâm already a 42 year-old uncle. Iâm an adult whoâs supposed to be able to think rationally.
Will I hit someone because I donât like them? Will I hit someone just because they picked a fight with me? âŠIn that case, Iâm no different from those delinquent adventurers.
My strength and my techniques are fine, but my mind isnât right.
âŠSince coming to this world, nothingâs really changed. I isolated myself within the forest, avoiding humans because I didnât like them in my previous life, and from then on, Iâve always been alone⊠At least, until I met Reinhart-san and the others.
If I hadnât met them, I wouldâve lived my whole life in the whole forest. Theyâve been taking care of me since our meeting. They gave me a bed to sleep on, cooked food for me, and welcomed me warmly⊠Am I starting to be spoiled by them?
Looking back on what Iâve done since coming to this world, Iâve done nothing but run away from the things I hated and without toiling for anything just played around while being spoiled by the dukeâs familyâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠThis canât continue. At this rate, Iâll turn into a no good adult. After all, you canât call a person whoâs only good at using reckless violence a good person.
Iâm grateful to the duke and his family, but I have to leave them. Iâll start training myself again. I canât keep depending on them. I have to stand on my own feet.
Iâve thought countless times how I should thank them, but with how much theyâve given to me, the very thought alone is shameless.
I thought of such things until I got back to town.
