Chapter 1292: Farewell and Apology

Chapter 1292: Chapter 1292: Farewell and Apology

The Xiao Family member squeezed the handkerchief in her hand, looked up at the girl, who seemed even leaner than the last time, and suddenly smiled, “I’ve come to say farewell.”

Shu Yu paused with the teacup in her hand, looking at her in surprise, “Farewell? Is Lord Xiang going back to the capital?”

No, that’s not right. If Lord Xiang were returning to the capital, Meng Yunzheng wouldn’t have failed to mention it to her.

So then…

Sure enough, in the next moment, the Xiao Family member shook her head, “No, it’s I who am returning to the capital, I’m going back alone.”

Shu Yu calculated the time; the Xiao Family member hadn’t been here for a few months, right?

She had clearly come for Xiang Weinan, yet she was returning after such a short time. Had something happened?

The Xiao Family member said, “My family sent me a letter, wanting me to return home for the New Year. I still haven’t adapted to Jiangyuan County; being thousands of miles away in the first year makes me uneasy at heart. It’s just as well that my family asked me to return to the capital, so I thought I might as well go back.”

Shu Yu was momentarily stunned; when she mentioned family, it was definitely not the Xiang Family.

That meant it was only the Xiao Family.

Now that the new emperor has ascended the throne, but it wasn’t the Third Prince who succeeded. As the biggest competitor before, the Third Prince still holds no small influence. The new emperor is surely taking action against him.

The current situation of the Third Prince can be imagined; likewise, the situation of the Xiao Family isn’t optimistic either.

It’s unclear what the Xiao Family intends for the Xiao Family member to do by returning.

However, Shu Yu found it inappropriate to discuss this with the Xiao Family member, so after she expressed her intention to leave, Shu Yu could only say, “Well then… I wish you a smooth journey.”

“Thank you, though who knows when we’ll meet again after this farewell.”

Shu Yu replied politely, “There will surely be opportunities. Lord Xiang and my fiancé are friends. If Lord Xiang gets a promotion and returns to the capital, we too can go to the capital, and we could meet up then.”

The Xiao Family member was taken aback upon hearing this, then bitterly smiled and mumbled softly, “Lord Xiang? By then, it’s uncertain if I’ll still be his wife.”

Despite the Xiao Family member’s very low voice, Shu Yu, with her sharp ears, heard it clearly.

The implications of the Xiao Family member’s words were immense.

Yet her reasoning seemed sound; the marriage between the Xiao Family member and Xiang Weinan was one she had schemed for. If misfortune befalls the Xiao Family, and she loses her backing, their marriage is indeed likely to end.

Shu Yu, understanding Xiang Weinan to some extent, believed he wasn’t someone who would abandon his wife and children for such reasons.

But she didn’t know the Xiang family well; the future is uncertain, and there are many entangled interests, so who knows what might happen?

Shu Yu pretended not to have heard, lowered her head, and took another sip of tea.

Fortunately, the Xiao Family member quickly changed the topic, “In fact, besides saying farewell, my primary reason for coming this time is to apologize to you.”

This was her main purpose; otherwise, she wasn’t well-acquainted with Lu Shuyu, so why would she come to bid farewell to her before returning to the capital?

“Last time, I was deceived and misled to wrongly think there was something between you and my lord, so I hastily wanted to introduce you to someone suitable, causing you distress. I’m very sorry.”

“Deceived?”

The Xiao Family member nodded, “In the back courtyards of large families, when there are too many women, there are bound to be all kinds of schemes and plots. But I’ve dealt with her, and she can’t cause any more trouble. I’ve also clarified this matter to my husband. I should have come to apologize to you earlier, but I couldn’t bring myself to. I’m leaving for the capital tomorrow, and if I don’t say something now, I fear I won’t have the chance anymore.”
